Patrick Sean Barry - Bio
Born the second son of a second son, in Long Branch, New Jersey, Barry grew up in a devout Irish Catholic family in a small town outside Boston, Massachusetts, where his Boy Scout Master, Arthur Adams, was a direct descendant of John Quincy Adams. An honors graduate of Amherst College, two themes of Barry’s life have been to travel as much as possible and to face his personal fears. His journeys have taken him to experience sunrise atop Mount Fuji, Japan; protests outside the American Embassy in Beijing; being thrown off a horse and breaking three ribs while riding alone in the high country of Wyoming, body surfing in three oceans (Atlantic, Pacific & Indian Ocean), scuba diving with white tipped sharks off Kauai, Hawaii and night scuba diving with sea lions off Santa Barbara Island in California; having his Land Rover charged by a rogue elephant in Kruger Game Park in South Africa; experiencing live gunfire of battle in the streets of Guatemala City, exploring numerous Maya pyramids of the Yucatan, surveying the ruins of a medieval castle in the back country of France, as well as finding a precious gold ring at the bottom of the Adriatic Sea off Croatia. It’s all true.
Barry holds a fourth degree black belt in Go Soku Ryu karate and trained at the World Headquarters of the International Karate Association, where he also received his third degree black belt in Toshin Ryu―the study of Japanese traditional weapons―with a special focus on the iaido applications of the katana (Japanese Sword). He’s an emeritus member of the Hole in the Wall Gang, a club honoring the Western Cowboy tradition, who rides in at the Hole in the Wall country of Wyoming every year, having ridden there for ten years. Sports have always been part of his relationship with life, and he has been on swim, track, basketball, water polo, and football teams, and played A Team rugby at Amherst. He is currently a member of the Conjeo Fencing Club with his son, where they train with a special focus on foil and épée.
